Yard Sale Raises $10k for Democratic Candidates

Democratic organizers say grassroots fundraiser was a success.

A yard sale held in East Hampton this weekend to raise money for Rep. Tim Bishop and President Obama was a resounding success, raising $10,000 for the candidates' election campaigns, according to the organizers.

Joan Lesser, who hosted the yard sale at her Alewive Brook Road home in Northwest Woods with the help of the East Hampton Democratic Committee, received donations from many East Hampton democrats.

"There was so much enthusiasm among volunteers and buyers that we stayed open on Sunday," she said by email Wednesday. Her husband, Peter Lesser went around town changing the dates on the posters, "enabling us to attract another group of buyers who had not come the day before," she said.

"By Sunday night we had raised almost $10,000, inspiring me to make calls on Monday to people who might be interested in some of our remaining merchandise. Tuesday afternoon we hit our $10,000 target," Lesser said.

Money raised will be split between Bishop, D-Southampton, and Obama's campaign funds, she said.

Lesser came up with the idea and held a similar yard sale during the last presidential election, raising $6,000 for Obama.
