Village Board Member David Brown Says He'll Resign

After 20 years, Brown says he has other things to do.

David H. Brown, who has been on the for 20 years, confirmed that he will tender his resignation on Wednesday.

"Things change," Brown said by phone on Tuesday night. "I'm retired now and there are others things I'd like to do."

Brown said he joined the board in 1991 and his current term won't expire for another two years.

His resignation will be effective this week, he said, though he declined to get into specifics of why he decided to step-down now.

Last year, Brown retired from his employment with the Town of East Hampton, where he served for 14 years as the Deputy Highway Superintendent and later as the Clerk of the Works.

"It's been a pleasure to serve the village," Brown said, adding that he enjoyed being apart of preserving the village.

Mayor Paul F. Rickenbach Jr. said that while he had heard a rumor that Brown planned to resign, he was only first hearing that it was in fact true. "He'll be missed," Rickenbach said.

The village board will have to decide whether to leave a vacancy on the board until elections in June 2012 or to appoint someone to fill the position for nine months.

Deputy Mayor Barbara Borsack said she was "anxious" to see who might step-up to fill Brown's seat. "Openings don't happen every day," she said.

While Rick Lawler is in the midst of his first term, most of the board members have been on the board a decade or more.

The board meets again on Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. in the Emergency Services Building.
