Town Hearing Scheduled On Federal Airport Grant

Town board looks to apply for deer fence, while activists say they are pushing proposal through before elected members take a seat.

On Dec. 1, the East Hampton Town Board will hear from the public on a proposal to request Federal Aviation Administration money for a new deer fence around the East Hampton Airport.

The hearing comes in the mist of anti-airport noise activists who don't want to see the town accept any more federal grants because it , such as curfews and banning certain noisy aircraft.

According to a report on 27East, activists believe the proposal is being pushed through before new town board members take office in 2012. They had said they would not accept FAA grants.

In September, the FAA approved the town's Airport Layout Plan, which allows the town to ask for grants. This summer on the runway at the airport in August.

In a quote from 27East's story, Kathy Cunningham of the Quiet Skies Coalition, said, “It’s not about the fence,” she said. “It’s about local control. That’s the deal. If you take 
FAA money, no more local control, and it’s not about the fence.”
