Thiele Appointed Task Force Chair

State assemblyman will helm the Task Force on University-Industry Cooperation.

First District Assemblyman Fred Thiele Jr., of Sag Harbor, recently received an appointment from Speaker of the Assembly Sheldon Silver to lead a task force aimed at promoting research and development initiatives and setting new goals for partnerships between universities and industry.

The Assembly Task Force on University-Industry Cooperation has existed since the 1980s and in recent years has focused on developing and utilizing alternative, sustainable energy technologies, putting federal funds toward high-tech research and development, and expanding partnerships between universities and their communities, according to Thiele’s office.

"I am truly honored to be given this opportunity,” Thiele is quoted as saying in a statement from his office. “Now, more than ever, as we rebuild New York's economy, we must strengthen and enhance the relationships and collaborations between the private sector and higher education institutions. We need to allow industry to have access to our university laboratory facilities, while at the same time supplying them with well-educated, experienced students. This builds a sustainable industry, sustainable economy, and a sustainable New York.”
