Sound Off: Should the Feds Reauthorize Unemployment Benefits?

More than 2 million Americans would receive retroactive lump-sum payments of federal unemployment benefits under a Democrat-backed bill currently being considered by the Senate, according to the Huffington Post.

Congress let federal long-term unemployment insurance expire at the end of Decemeber after it had been in place since 2008.

A compromise bill in the Senate would reauthorize the benefits, which kick in for workers who use up six months of state compensation, but it would end benefits for individuals with gross incomes in the preceding year that exceeded $1 million, the Huffington Post reported.

For those of you who think that the Democrats are angels and care so much about the people and the Republicans are the evil empire with all the money, look at this list of the wealthiest members of Congress http://media.cq.com/50richest/the-50-richest-members-of-congress-113th-2013.html . Seven of the top ten are Democrats! Look at this list of top donors to the two parties.. https://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/list.php Bet it's not what you thought it would be. The Democrats are in bed with as many people as the Republicans. A lot of them leave Congress a lot wealthier than when they went in. They are ALL crooked. Keep drinking the Kool Aid and think it's just the Republicans. Our representatives do what is best for them, not us. The unions were started out of necessity and were a great thing at one time, but they are wrecking our economy too, it's not just the big corporations. My husband and his father own a business that does a trade (union) for commercial customers. They have to charge so much for each worker (up to $125 an hour in some cases) that no one can afford to hire them. And when they do get work, sometimes it takes 6 months to a year to get paid. My sister in law just got her doctorate in education. She owes $90,000 in student loans. $1,000 a month until she is in her 70's. The union says that now because of her qualifications, she can only accept jobs paying a specific amount. Guess what? There are no schools offering those high paying jobs so she can't get one! Does that make any sense to you? It's a very simple theory. Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Teach him to fish, he'll feed himself. We need jobs, not handouts. There is no magical money tree in the back of the White House. Our government already operates at a deficit every month. How long do you think they can take money from the rich before it runs out? Does anyone here pay for their own health insurance because they have a small business? We do. It costs us $1,800 a month. That's right. More than my mortgage payment. We are in an HMO too. If we went into the exchanges we might save maybe $100 a month, but none of our doctors accept it. For my friend Paul who has no clue about anything about me and has called me numerous insults… You think Republicans lie? Where were you for the whole "If you like your insurance you can keep it", or "If you like your doctors you can keep them"? Did you miss that? My insurance was cancelled in the very beginning of this whole Obamacare fiasco. As much as you all hate big business, capitalism is the way to go. When the waters rise, we all get lifted up and float. Even Bono from U2, a rockstar who has been trying to help Africa for the past 15 years has finally realized that the only way out of poverty is capitalism. Big corporations are going to make money no matter what. Either the government can do things to help them spread the wealth, or they can restrict them so they can only make enough for themselves. That's the way it is. Before I go, might I add that us mean conservatives give 30% more to charity than liberals. Read this http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/21/opinion/21kristof.html?_r=0

And Deb, don't forget that Obamacare is yet ANOTHER tax which is a redistribution scheme, so says the Supreme Court.

EXTEND!!!! It's pathetic that we as citizens allow the people who have never had to use social benefits decide whether we should be allowed to use what we all pay for every week of our labor out of our paychecks. Tell me one person on Capital Hill who has ever lost a job and had to use the Unemployment System until they found another? I bet its very small number. Yet we give them the decision making power to rule on our lives? Why? They receive full medical coverage, lifetime jobs for some, insane pensions that the working man/woman could only dream of, yet they do not work a full year like the rest of us? These are the people who we want representing our everyday issues? Not in my opinion. Time for this country to ORGANIZE!!! It's us against them it seems. Very sad day to be an american when you see our government coming off the rails and there is no answer in sight.

Deb- I think you make excellent points and capitalism is the only economic system that works. However we haven't seen capitalism in this country in years. Too big too fail. Subsidies, tax breaks. Adam Smith would be rolling over in his grave. You as a small business owner is the one getting screwed by the government actions and large corporations greed
