NRA to Make Announcement Friday; What Do You Want to Hear From Them?

Fairfax-headquartered group issues statement about preventing future tragedies after shooting in Connecticut.

After days of silence, the National Rifle Association, headquartered in Fairfax, has released a statement on the tragic shooting in Newtown, CT, saying it will make "meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again" and pledged to make an announcement on Friday .

In the release, the organization begins to explain its silence, saying: "Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting."The organization announced it will hold a press conference Friday in Washington, D.C.

More details on Friday's press conference will be released when timing is deemed "appropriate," according to the statement.

In the interim, we want to know, what do you hope the NRA does in response to the Newtown tragedy?

The truth, that they exist only to enrich themselves. The second amendment is only the mechanism they use to make money. We've read about babies and children being killed by gun violence for years, it was just never all at once. If they have to change their stance now to keep the money coming in, they will do it in a heartbeat.

I have been a longtime NRA member and for the most part have supported their efforts. I am a hunter not a shooter so my thoughts are selective. I have never seen the need for assault weapons to be available to the general public for any reason. As a hunter, I have never put more than 4/5 rounds in my rifle and see no reason for more. At the very least, all weapons should be limited to a maximum of 5 rounds -or less. We must have SEVERE penalties (fines/prison) for those who manufacture, import, sell , provide or posess weapons or clips that violate this restriction. If we place a loaded weapon on a table and allow no one to touch it -it will NEVER injure anyone or anything. WITH THIS IN MIND; We must find a better way of dealing with those like the Sandy Hook shooter to remove them from the general population BEFORE the slaughter humans. Many of these people are recoginized thru educational evaluations and are not dealt with properly -for a number of reasons ! WAKE UP -get them help, absolutely - away from our streets, schools, and any other venues where sane people should be safe. I realize this is a major problem with many facets - but with have to make efforts- now to stop the senseless violence. I firmly believe the bad guys will always be able to obtain weapons - At least we should and can make it much harder to do so.

Reading some of these posts is a chilling reminder that there are some anger/fear issues for some who insist on having powerful personal arsenals. Who wants to piss them off in an open discussion?
MARTIN DREW December 20, 2012 at 04:14 PM
Mr Stern - http://www.infowars.com/obama-orders-children-murdered/ I can debate anything in a rational manner ; when people call me names ; I get offended ; for I am AWAKE to truth . 2nd Admendment allows US a choice. ; to bear or not to bear ; you and others forego your rights ; that's fine ; but please don't impose your choice on the rest of us who understand the purpose and intention of the constitution ; No matter your choice ; please don't tread on mine. Anger and fear have no place in a rational discussion . Truth takes precedent ... Not fear mongering ... Check the link : pass it on : copy it ; truth is a rough road at times . There is a war for your mind ongoing . Ty for being man enought to be you . Others could learn from it . Hiding with lies ; makes them a pea of the pod. Be well - I look fed to your thoughts after seeing the link . MartinDrewShow@gmail.com

Thank you, Martin. Diversity of opinions -- and the freedom to express them -- is at the core of what makes our country great. As well, in my humble opinion, tone seems to be as relevant as -- and even more effective -- than content. I've found such respect especially effective in the face of anger and disrespect. I use the terms "humble" and respect sincerely, because I am just one fallible human being with feelings as well as thoughts. Hence, I stand ready to change my mind with new information. I am also acutely aware that, as Dennis Miller used to say after his rants, "Of course, that's just my opinion....I could be wrong". I also try to leave my mind open to new input, especially when I feel so POSITIVE about the rightness of my opinions. As Ambrose Bierce brilliantly wrote as the definition of the word "positive" -- (adjective) To be mistaken at the top of one's voice.

I think I will learn a lot from you Mr. Stern .. I'll keep your new awareness of tone in mind .. Lots of misinformation out there ; spewed by self righteous individuals of no name ... TY for being real . Life has many choices ... I'll continue to amend and change as life shows me the way .. For now I seek truth of agenda in our government .. And to be mistaken at the top of ones voice .. Leads us to knowing fact from fiction .. I'm sure we all have been there .. as we learn; in the search for truth ; justice and the American way . Be well Mr. Stern .

And of course that's my opinion ..and I could be wrong .. Cheers Mr Stern !

And cheers to you, Martin. When we get together to share opinions/information respectfully and civilly, it strengthens our communities and our country.
