North Haven Mayor Charged with Drunken Driving

Laura Nolan was arrested just over the bridge in Sag Harbor Village on Friday.

North Haven Village Mayor Laura M. Nolan was arrested on a drunken driving charge following an accident in Sag Harbor Village on Friday afternoon.

Detective Jeffrey Proctor was on patrol when he saw Nolan's Mercedes hit the back of a Corvette at the stop sign on Bay Street, near the intersection of Main Street, he said.

"She couldn't have been going anymore than 3 miles per hour, but the fiberglass on the back of the Corvette cracked," said Proctor, who was driving in front of the at the time.

He instructed both drivers to turn onto the so he could take an accident report. That's when he realized Nolan was intoxicated — he could smell alcohol on her breath and she had a hard time producing documentation, he said. She was so intoxicated, he said, that he did not perform any field sobriety tests.

At headquarters, she submitted to a test. He declined to release the blood alcohol level.

However, given she was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, her blood alcohol level must have been above .18.

She was also taken to for a medical evaluation. She was released into police custody and held overnight for arraignment.

Sag Harbor Village Justice Andrea Schiavoni arraigned her, but the bail conditions were not immediately available.

Nolan was re-elected as mayor in 2010 for her fifth term. She is up for re-election in 2013.
