Montauk 'Listen In' Forum Set for Monday Night

Democratic candidates will listen to residents concerns and how they think government officials can help.

The Democratic candidates for supervisor and town board are holding their second "Listen In" forum on Monday night.

An opportunity for residents to tell the candidates what's most important to them, the forum will be held at Gurney's Inn in Montauk, starting at 6:45 p.m.

Refreshments will be served first, for 15 minutes, and the forum opens at 7 p.m.

Larry Cantwell, who is running for supervisor, will chair the discussion, as he did for the first "Listen In" forum, which was held in Springs last month. According to a statement from the East Hampton Democratic Committee, the candidates hope the opportunity affords residents to discuss "what they think town government can do to improve the quality of life in Montauk."

Town board candidates Job Potter and Kathee Burke-Gonzalez "are well aware of the many important issues facing the Montauk Community as it deals with the effects of growth and coastal erosion," the statement said.

"I look forward to hearing how we can strike the right balance between commercial uses, development, and residential life in Montauk, the home of year-round residents, second-homeowners, and a thriving tourist destination," Potter said.

"We must understand how vulnerable we are from the impacts of coastal storms and plan smarter in the future to help protect Montauk," Burke-Gonzalez said.
