Lynch Ousts Highway Supe

Absentee ballots could still have an impact on the East Hampton Town Trustee race.

While the race for town supervisor is , the highway superintendent position was clearly won by Republican candidate on Tuesday night.

He started celebrating by popping champagne at Republican headquarters at as the early results came in from poll watchers. Final numbers from the Board of Election has him at 1,180 votes ahead of incumbent . Lynch received 3,567 votes or nearly 60 percent, while King has 2,387 votes, or about 40 percent.

The race, as well as most of King's most recent term, was marred by accusations against King. Four in the past six months, the latest being filed in September. While King has denied their claims, Lynch got their support and was surrounded by a number of them at Indian Wells.

The restaurant erupted into applause each time Lynch gained a stronger lead.

"Next year, it's going to be a real pleasure to have an actual conversation with my highway superintendent," Supervisor Bill Wilkinson said in congratulating Lynch, even though his own race was too close to call.

Justice won re-election to the bench by the biggest margin in all three of her elections, she said. A Republican, she received 62.95 percent of the vote over Democrat candidate .

Absentee ballots could slightly shake up the trustee race. At the polls, the top nine were incumbent Republicans and Tim Bock, followed by former trustee and Democrat Stephen M. Lester. Diane McNally, who is the head clerk of the trustees and a Republican, followed behind Lester. Newcomer Sean McCaffrey, a Republican, and Republican incumbents and finished fifth, sixth and seventh.

Republican candidate Nathaniel Miller received 6.10 percent, coming in eighth, and Democrat candidate finished ninth with 5.13 percent, but it's close with the rest of the nine candidates.
