Life's a Beach, Except if You're a Dog

Reminder: Summer season is upon us, dogs aren't allowed on beaches during the day.

With Memorial Day around the corner, we have to remind ourselves to share the beaches — and sometimes that means with our four-legged friends, too.

Starting in about mid-May, dogs aren't allowed on the beach between during the beach day, even though the beaches aren't open to swimmers just yet. The times differ slightly between the town and the village to when man's best friend can smell the ocean air.

Dogs or other animals are restricted from East Hampton Town ocean or bay beaches from May 15 to Sept. 15 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., according to the town code.

In East Hampton Village, dogs and other animals are not permitted on the beach between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. from the second Sunday in May through Sept. 30, code enforcement office Thomas Lawrence said.

Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets and keeping them under control on all beaches. Plastic bags for clean-up are provided at the entrance to most beaches, and there are garbage pails to so you don't have to take the stink with you in the car.
