Karl Grossman: Shut Down the Airport

Columnist said East Hampton airport services few and has become a public nuisance.

In his weekly syndicated column, Karl Grossman said the should be shut down.

"If that’s the only thing that can be done, it should be: the noisemaker should be shut down," Grossman said. "The East Hampton Airport is in no way a vital public transportation center. It services a very select few — inflicting much noise on everyone else in the process. It constitutes, like a raucous racetrack, a public nuisance, not only for people in East Hampton, but for folks throughout eastern Long Island."

His column, which appeared in The Shelter Island Reporter after the on taking FAA money for a deer fence at the airport, points out that helicopter traffic flies over Brookhaven Town, western Southampton and Riverhead, as well as the North and the South forks and Shelter Island.

"The chopper traffic is a relatively new phenomenon that has gotten completely out of hand," he said.
