In Sag Harbor, 'Legs' Brought to Heel

The Sag Harbor Village Zoning Board of Appeals says Larry Rivers sculpture must come down, The Sag Harbor Express reports.

"Legs," a 16-foot tall sculpture by the late artist Larry Rivers, has been ordered to be removed from Ruth Vered and Janet Lehr's Madison Street home by Sept. 15, according to .

The Express reports that the Sag Harbor Village Zoning Board of Appeals agreed with the building inspector that the artwork, which is mounted to the side of the house and illuminated at night, is an unlawful accessory structure. "Legs" has been set just 1 foot back from the sidewalk, where 35 feet is required.

The legs have been determined to be a structure that needed to comply with building code rather than a work of art by a widely respected artist. It's a pity. I find them rather whimsical.

No - just recognizing that the decisions made are not always easy and just as there is disagreement here, its not a simple thing to get the consenses of a community. There is not always a "wrong" and a "right" - just differing opinions. I'm sure the members of the board thought they were doing what was best. Their opinion. It's impossible to please everyone and there will always be people who disagree with any decision.
