Health Officials: No Swimming at Havens Until 24 Hours After Rain Stops

An advisory was issued for 66 beaches following heavy rainfall on Sunday and Monday.

Heavy rainfall has caused the county to issue an advisory for in Sag Harbor.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services recommends that beach-goers avoid swimming or wading in these waters until after two successive tidal flushes or 24 hours after the rainfall ends.

Sixty-six beaches, mainly ones along the northern shoreline of Great South Bay, are included in the advisory. Those beaches experience limited tidal flushing and are impacted by storm water discharges from the surrounding watersheds, the health department said in a statement on Monday.

Advisories are typically issued for Havens Beach after heavy rainfall.

"The advisory is based on the potential that bacterial numbers in excess of New York State standards, resulting from the heavy rain, will impact these areas," the department said.

Beaches that are not influenced by storm-water runoff, include ocean beaches, those on the Peconic Estuary and most on the Long Island Sound.
