Georgica Beach Re-opens Friday

Village officials say the beach has replenished itself enough to accomodate a lifeguard stand.

Mayor Paul F. Rickenbach Jr. announced that the beach will once again be a lifeguard-protected beach thanks to the natural replenishment that has occurred there over the past month.

Prior to Memorial Day weekend, village officials over to Wiborg's Beach. in Aug. 2011, and did not replenish itself as much as had been hoped. Bathrooms, however, were left open.

"Mother Nature is replenishing the beach she wrought havoc upon," Rickenbach said. "As this beach continues to improve we hope we will be able to maintain this for the remainder for the summer season."

Village Administrator Larry Cantwell said that the beach's width has returned, though the elevation isn't quite the same. 

Lifeguards will be at until Friday and then be moved to Georgica, Cantwell said. Portable bathrooms will be kept at Wiborg's as "an insurance policy," he said.

When village officials decided to close the beach to swimmers in May, the beach had already showed signs of improvement.

The , when there was a tidal surge and erosion that caused the asphalt to break apart last summer, was recently completed.

The village reclaimed 20 feet of the road-end and some sand was being brought in to make the transition from the top of the road down to the beach smoother. covered the $51,256 bid awarded to Keith Grimes for the road-end and replenishment work.
