Former Montauk Assemblyman Jumps Party Lines, Endorses Bishop

John Behan will support the Democrat's re-election campaign.

A South Fork Republican heavyweight has thrown his support behind Democratic incumbent Rep. Tim Bishop in the First Congressional District race.

Former State Assemblyman John Behan, who was chairman of the East Hampton Republican Committee when Randy Altschuler first decided to run against Bishop in the 2010 race, said his decision to go against his party's endorsement before the 2012 election was about the candidates, not politics.

"In this election, I will not take a bully with a bag of money to come in here and use the congressional campaign committee from Washington to tell me, or us, who our congressman should be," Behan said at a press conference on Monday morning at La Bodgea, a new restaurant in Montauk part-owned by former Democratic East Hampton Town Councilwoman Julia Prince. "I know who our congressman is and I know our congressman should be and that’s Congressman Tim Bishop."

Behan served in the Assembly from 1978 to 1995.

At the start of the announcement Behan said he wanted to address rumors that he had a vendetta against the local Republicans. "This is not a grudge against the Republican party, but I just wanted you to know that I do have some ill-wishes for them, when they just went against the wishes of the guy who they chose to be their Republican chairman for close to three years," he said.

He claims leaders of the party have tried to take credit for his ideas, such as getting East Hampton Town Supervisor Bill Wilkinson and town board members Theresa Quigley and Dominick Stanzione elected in 2009. He said his replacement, Trace Duryea, should have taken his suggestion during the last election.

"Had she taken Marilyn Behan and Bill Mott, as I suggested, they would have had a clean sweep the entire election," Behan said.

Marilyn, a long-time Democrat, is Behan's wife. In 2011, she only received the Independence Party nomination and ran with Mott, a former town trustee, losing the vote to Democrats Sylvia Overby and Peter Van Scoyoc. Republican candidates Richard Haeg and Steven Gaines also lost and Wilkinson was only re-elected by 15 votes.

Behan said his decision to reach across the aisle in what's shaping up to be the Bishop-Altschuler race has a lot to do with his change in opinion of Altschuler. George Demos, R-Ronkonkoma, in late May.

"Two years ago, I was Republican chairman when Mr. Altschuler, who I now call the Great Houdini, appeared. After he lost that election, he disappeared and we haven’t seen or heard a word from him until this year, when he wanted to seek election," Behan said.

He also believes Altschuler knows very little about Suffolk County.

Bishop, Behan said, is no stranger. "I like a guy who is homegrown and knows the district like we all know the back of our hand," he said, adding that Bishop has worked hard for veterans. Behan is a Vietnam veteran who lost both of his legs in combat and who has worked on behalf of veterans' rights.

Diana Weir, Altschuler's campaign manager, said, "Today's endorsement was really about local politics, and has no impact on the tremendous momentum Randy has right now. We focused on fixing Long Island's economy; we have won endorsements from the New York State Independence Party, the Suffolk County Conservative Party and the Suffolk County Republican Party." She said Altschuler has been able to focus solely on the general election since Demos dropped out.

Behan said it isn't the first time he's reached across the aisle. As part of "Republicans for Pike," he supported former Rep. Otis Pike, who had been a marine pilot and served in congress from 1961 to 1979.

Unbelievable. So much for majority rule. The board forgets who they work for. They made a mockery ofRead More the democratic process. What they did was nothing different then totalitarian rule. They should be relived of their duty for not representing the people and supporting the majority rule. One can only imagine what other crooked decision making may be taking place that is contrary to the people's wishes. Shame on them! The mayer is a coward who forgets what side his bred is buttered on. The majority got him his job along with the other councilmen and they chose to turn their back on the ones who gave them a job. Bunch of arrogant, out of touch with the people, conceded morons is what they are.

My name is Rich Wilson. I am running for the East Hampton School Board. My agenda is no secret. ItRead More is to increase Scientific Literacy for all of our students in order for them to be better prepared when they enter an increasingly complex and technological world. I have been involved in this initiative for the last 2 years, working with teachers and administrators in all of the school districts in the Town of East Hampton. Cooperatively with a private donor and The GEHEF (Greater East Hampton Education Foundation), we have successfully begun supplying training and complete FOSS (Full Option Science System) materials to our Elementary and Middle School teachers. Using FOSS,The students discover the basic concepts of science through hands-on investigations, the teacher doesn't "cover" them. This is not text book driven, or rote memorization. Writing, reading and math are included with each investigation, resulting in a better understanding of the way the world works. This is being accomplished WITHOUT taxpayer dollars. I am now involved in another joint project to benefit our students that is not funded by taxpayers - the details will be announced soon. I have been involved in Science education for most of my life : Sag Harbor School District (1968 - 1998) - Wrote and delivered the lab component of the K-6 Elementary Science Curriculum . - Started the first Robotics class in 1995. Was the only team from Long Island at the time to compete nationally in the FIRST Competition, (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) competition. -Taught a Biology Research class in conjunction with a Biology professor at SUNY Old Westbury. -Co-taught a "Timetables of History" seminar with a High School Social Studies teacher. East Hampton (1986 - 2004) -Owned and operated the "Village Toy Shop and Gifted Generation" , an educational toy store on Main Street, E.H. Amagansett (2003 - 2005) -Owned and operated "ROBOtech" in Amagansett Square, where we taught Lego Mindstorms Robotics to individuals and school groups. I now have the time to devote to the East Hampton School Board and hopefully play a part in the continuing efforts to better the future for all of our students, including my four grandchildren.
