Director of Natural Resources Suspended

Larry Penny says he "won't take this lying down."

After an executive session was held on Wednesday morning, the East Hampton Town Board suspended Larry Penny, the town's Director of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection.

Penny was suspended for 30 days without pay, according to the resolution.

Disciplinary charges were lodged against Penny on Dec. 7 by Town Attorney John Jilnicki pursuant to New York Civil Service Law, the resolution further states.

Reached at home in Sag Habror soon after the resolution was passed, Penny said his office had received a fax notifying him of the resolution. "Obviously, I'm not going to take this lying down," he said.

Penny said he didn't know what had prompted the suspension, only that the notification mentioned something about insubordination, but he wasn't quite sure.

East Hampton Town Supervisor Bill Wilkinson did not return a call for comment.

They suspend him without telling him what the specific charges are??? What is going on?

The board can suspend while still determining the specific charges, but they also might have already issued a copy of the charges to him (remember he wasn't at the office when they came). The board doesn't have to disclose it to the public, other than what was in the resolution (which was reported above). We'll follow up with Mr. Penny later after he's read the paperwork.

Insubordination? It's going to get ugly quick in EH now that the election is over.

Just as I was going to approach his office on a opinion for a scenic easement replanting to insure it was done correctly . Guess I'll have to wait (30) days .. To get his input. Another dept. being taken over .. Isn't politics a hoot!

Again the town is being run like a corporation, welcome to Disney. It sure didn't take long for the fur to fly . Mr. Wilkinson wants every one to be accountable for their actions but what about his ? Mr. Wilkinson you almost lost the election, you didn't win by much. The former supervisor left office leaving us in financial ruins and when your term is over you will be known as town bully not supervisor.

In all fairness ; let's ask why? Maybe Sipervisor Wilkinson had a real reason to act .. Let's hear more details BEFORE judgment .. More facts please ..

What is probably going on is that our boy Wilkinson took his election as a mandate to fire or eliminate another person in town hall. Has anyone asked why the dredging of three mile harrbor will not be complete, ??? The equiptment is there, and the money should have been alloted to finish the job. Larry is a fantastic guy, knowledgeable about the whole scene within this town, and hopefuly for Wilkinsons sake he is on solid ground or most of thgis town is going to be on his ass big time

I have known Larry Penny since moving to East Hampton in the early 1980's. He is an expert in his field, professional, and an asset to our town government and our entire East End environment.
