Beach Restoration Under Reconsideration Following Sandy

Montauk area specifically under the microscope, in light of previous study.

As federal officials work toward implementing a beach restoration plan along the South Fork, they are reportedly reconsidering their options in the wake of Superstorm Sandy – namely in lower-lying Montauk.

According to an article on 27East.com, the Fire Island to Montauk Point Reformulation Study is under reconsideration as the Army Corps of Engineers was awarded over $5 billion in federal funding after last fall's storm.

The original study was commenced to "identify, evaluate and recommend long-term solutions for hurricane and storm damage reduction for homes and businesses within the floodplain extending along 83-miles of ocean and bay shorelines from Fire Island Inlet to Montauk Point."

An unprecedented storm such as Sandy was not part of that study.

Rep. Tim Bishop told 27East "this is a must-have, that we simply must replenish the beach there. The Army Corps has indicated to me that they are working in that direction."
