As Tax Bills Go Out, School Tax Reduction Deadline is Looming

Don't forget to re-register for STAR school tax reduction. The deadline is Dec. 31.

While December is all about the holidays, there's also that dreaded tax bill to think about this time of year.

The tax bills are being mailed (of all days) Friday, Dec. 13.

Len Bernard, the town's budget officer, said that if taxpayers want to pay before receiving their bill in the mail they can do so by either visiting the Tax Receiver’s office at 300 Pantigo Road, Suite 106, or calling the tax receiver at 631-324-2770.

However, town officials are also reminding property owners that if they want to receive a BASIC STAR school tax reduction that they must re-register by the end of the month. The deadline is Dec. 31 to continue to be eligible for the exemption that can save hundreds in school taxes.

STAR is a State program. Those looking to re-register must log on to the State website at www.tax.ny.gov or call 518-457-2036 to re-register by telephone.

"Remember this is for everyone who is currently receiving the BASIC STAR tax reduction or wants to sign up to get the exemption," Supervisor Bill Wilkinson said in a public service announcement. "If you don’t re-register by December 31 you will lose the tax reduction."
