Village Police Logs: Alleged Thief Leads Cops on Chase

Caleb J. MacDonald was arrested after a brief struggle on charges he stole from Blue and Cream.

The following information was supplied by the East Hampton Village Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate guilt.

Village police were involved in a foot chase on Saturday afternoon after the man they were questioning took off running.

Detectives were asking Caleb J. McDonald, 23, of Springs, about $60 in cash and a $450 jacket that went missing from earlier. He was in their vehicle, in front of the store on The Circle, when he got out and ran. Officers caught up with him not far away on Main Street and Huntting Lane, and after a brief struggle he was apprehended, they said.

McDonald was charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, petty larceny and resisting arrest, all misdemeanors. He was held on $500 bail and transferred to the Suffolk County jail in Riverside.

Police said Officer Julio Galeano suffered a hamstring injury during the pursuit.

Driving on the Curb

Virginia W. Briggs, 21, of East Hampton, was charged with driving while intoxicated on Saturday at 3:30 a.m. Police said they saw her 2007 Jeep Cherokee hop a curb while making a left from Newtown Lane into the parking lot. She was stopped, failed field sobriety tests and refused to take a breathylzer. She was also ticketed for failure to use the designated lane, driving on a sidewalk and not signaling.

Police Say Driver Gave Phony Name

Edward P. Kenny, 55, of Montauk, allegedly gave police someone else's name following an accident on April 19 at 9:27 a.m. According to an arrest report, Kenny was involved in a crash on Newtown and Cooper lanes and claimed his name was Charles Kenny and that he was from Saratoga. He shouldn't have been driving, police said, because his license had been suspended three times for an insurance lapse, for failure to pay fines and for failure to answer a summons.

He was arrested on charges of criminal impersonation in the second degree and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree, both misdemeanors. He was released on $200 bail and will be arraigned on May 12.
