UPDATE: Driver in Wainscott Accident Has Died

East Hampton Town police said the 51 year old man had a history of heart problems.

The driver whose truck cut across traffic on Montauk Highway in Wainscott and crashed into a tree on Saturday died at Southampton Hospital shortly after the accident, according to East Hampton Town police.

Detective Jacques Guillois said the 51 year old man was from Hastings-on-the-Hudson, N.Y. While his wife had been notified, the detective said they were witholding his name until they were sure his next of kin had been notified, as well.

The man, whose truck was towing a Boston Whaler, was on his way to Montauk for some fishing, Detective Guillois said. His beagle was in the truck with him. The dog was not injured in the crash.

Tobias Tracy, a witness at the scene on Saturday, said the man's Toyota Tacoma had veered across Montauk Highway, cutting a westbound car off, before it knocked down a small tree on the side of the road in front of in the Wainscott Shopping complex at about 4:25 p.m. When Tracy went to the man's aid, he was having difficulty breathing.

A passing motorist started CPR soon after, which was continued by emergency medical technicians from the Bridgehampton Fire Department.

Detective Guillois said the man had a history of heart problems and it appears he might have had a heart attack. However, his official cause of death is pending the medical examiner's report.
