Tugboat Captain Identified as Man Found Floating off Montauk

MONTAUK, NY -- The , on Saturday morning has been identified as the captain who went missing from his tugboat off the coast of Rhode Island 11 days ago.

The family of , was notified his body was found about three miles off Montauk Point, according to Petty Officer Gary Rives, a Coast Guard spokesman.

Rives said Sector Southeast New England had been in charge of the search and recovery operation.

O'Leary, 48, of Marblehead, MA, was the captain of the 91-foot tugboat towing a barge with 45,000 barrels of jet fuel. According to reports, on April 25 at about 2:30 p.m., his crew noticed that he was missing. The boat was about nine miles off Rhode Island at the time.

The Coast Guard search 775 square miles until the afternoon of April 26, when the search was suspended.

According to the Marblehead Reporter, the water was about 52 degrees where O’Leary went missing and he was not thought to be wearing a life jacket.

East Hampton Town Police Chief Ed Ecker said that the man's body was not badly decomposed and was still clothed when it was pulled out of the water on Saturday.

His body was spotted by a Montauk fishing boat. The Coast Guard and police detectives responded and helped bring the body back to shore.

The Suffolk County medical examiner's office was also brought into the investigation.

Police did not respond for immediate comment.
