Traffic Control Officers Don New Garb

Lighter, brighter uniforms lend itself well to the busy and hot summer in the Hamptons.

While traffic and angry drivers who get parking tickets may keep the East Hampton traffic control officers in the hot seat, at least they can breathe easier this summer.

Their new uniforms are made from a lighter material than the old blue uniforms, according to Police Chief Jerry Larsen. He said they allow the officers to stay cooler on hot and humid summer days.

Robert Jahoda, the head traffic control officer, picked out the new studs, which include a shirt that's made partially of a bright, reflective-type of material.

The uniforms help keep the officers safe, as drivers can also see the new uniforms easier. "We find them much more effective in terms of visibility," Larsen said.

In prior years, TCOs wore yellow and orange vests over their uniforms so that drivers could see them, particularly as they stand in crosswalks to help pedestrians cross busy Newtown Lane and Main Street.

The TCOs, who used to be known as "brownies" for the brown uniforms they used to wear before Larsen ordered blue ones several years ago, are also happy with the change in uniform.

Posing for a photo on Wednesday afternoon, Erik Vargas said he is grateful the village ordered new uniforms. "They breathe so much easier," he said.

The new uniforms also are easier to keep clean and get less wrinkled, keeping the officers looking professional, Larsen said.
