Town Police Logs: Recklessness Alleged on the High Seas

Also: Several DWI arrests reported.

The following information was supplied by the East Hampton Town Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

• While out at sea on July 13, a charter boat captain said his vessel suffered more than $2,500 in damages at the hand of another charter boat captain, East Hampton Town police said.

The alleged victim told police that he was operating the "Halfback," a 1985 Viking, with a six-person charter in Block Island Sound, around the Pollack Rips, which are about two miles east of the Montauk Point Lighthouse, when the "Luna-Sea," approached him from the port side.

He tried to reach the captain via VHF radio to avoid a collision, but was not able to make contact. "The captain of the Luna-Sea then turned his starboard side speeding past the stern of the Halfback damaging his wire trolling lines," according to the police report.

The charter boat captain pulled his boat next to the "Luna-Sea" to untangle the lines and find out what happened, when a man threw a six-ounce lead egg sinker through the port side window "at a high rate of speed nearly striking the occupants on board" and causing about $2,500 in damage, police said. The boat then left the area.

Both boats eventually returned to the Star Island Yacht Club and police were contacted. The victim did not immediately press charges.

On July 18, Robert C. Hallock III, 41, of Sag Harbor, turned himself into police on charges of third-degree criminal mischief, a felony, and second-degree reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor. He was released on an appearance ticket and will be arraigned in East Hampton Justice Court on Aug. 1.

• Dustin A. Dutrieux, 19, of East Hampton, was arrested on an aggravated DWI charge, a misdemeanor, in Montauk on July 16 after police said he nearly caused several accidents on West Lake Drive. A police officer was on West Lake Drive at about 9:50 p.m. when he saw a 1998 Jeep Cherokee speeding. The officer's radar unit logged 71 mph in a 45 mph zone. The vehicle also passed the officer after turning around around. Police said he saw him commit numerous traffic violations, as well as causing traffic in he oncoming lane to swerve and avoid a collision. Dutrieux was arrested at 10:20 p.m. Held overnight, Justice Lisa R. Rana released him on $200 bail.

• Michael L. McCarron, 22, of Montauk, was also arrested and charged with aggravated DWI, a misdemeanor, in Montauk. On July 18 at about 5 a.m., police said they were traveling behind McCarron's vehicle as it made a right turn onto Fernwood from West Lake, crossing over the solid double yellow line. Justice Rana released him on his own recognizance later that morning.

• Michael J. Scherer, 35, of Huntington Station, was arrested on an aggravated DWI charge, a misdemeanor, on July 18 in Montauk at about 4:50 a.m. Police said they saw him strike a curb while making a U-turn on West Lake Drive, near the intersection of Flamingo Avenue. He then allegedly made a wide right turn onto East Flamingo Avenue, crossing over pavement markings onto the opposite lane of travel. Police turned on their emergency lights, but Scherer ignored them, traveling west on East Flamingo Avenue and eventually parking his car in Harbor Side motel lot. Justice Rana released him on $500 bail.
