Swimmer Nearly Drowns at Main Beach

Thirty-year-old listed in critical condition at Southampton Hospital.

A swimmer is in critical condition after police and a bystander revived him on Thursday afternoon, East Hampton Village police said on Friday.

Police received a call about a swimmer in distress at Main Beach at 4:36 p.m. When they arrived, hey found Juan Carlos Salvana, a 30-year-old Long Island City man, at the edge of the surf unconscious and not breathing. Police said he had no pulse.

Officers and a bystander — Dr. Louis Cohen — initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation until the East Hampton Volunteer Ambulance Association arrived. Salvana was transported to Southampton Hospital. He is listed in critical condition, police said.

Chief Jerry Larsen said that after investigation, they found that Bill Roberson, a Michigan resident, swam out into the ocean and pulled Salvana to shore.

The beach was not open to swimming at the time, as no lifeguards were on duty.
