"He was in bad shape," Claflin said.

A Medevac was called, Claflin said, but given the severity of the driver's injuries and the wait time on the helicopter, ambulance personnel decided to take him to Southampton, instead.

Advanced emergency medical technicians from Amagansett, and personnel from Springs, were also on scene to assist.

Detectives are investigating the cause of the crash, said Claflin, who is also a sergeant in the police department but was not on duty.

The fire department helped close Three Mile Harbor Road, between Gardiner Avenue and Manor Lane, until about 2:50 a.m. Police took over the scene from there, Claflin said.
