Skull Found in Gardiner's Bay

Dive team's discovery believed to be the head of a body that washed ashore in May.

A human skull was recovered in Gardiner's Bay in Amagansett on Friday.

Chief Ed Ecker said the 's Dive Team was conducting an underwater search in connection with the discovery of a that washed ashore on on May 24. The dive team was doing a normal training dive at the same time.

The skull was found in about 8 to 10 feet of water 40 yards from shore to the west of Big Albert's.

"The skull was found in close proximity to the location where the remains were recovered," according to Detective Sgt. Robert Gurney, who put out a statement on Friday afternoon.

The skull has been forwarded to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's office.

The headless body has still not been identified. Police have said it is a man of small stature in his 20s or 30s. The body .
