Power Restored After Vehicle Takes Out Pole in Montauk
The two occupants were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police chief says.
Some customers in Montauk were without electricity on Saturday afternoon after a vehicle flipped over on Old Montauk Highway, taking down a pole.
East Hampton Town Police Chief Ed Ecker said the driver and a passenger were taken to Southampton Hospital after their vehicle rolled over, just west of Washington Street, at 1:30 p.m. Their injuries were not life-threatening.
The utility pole, which had a transformer on it, broke near the base, leaving it dangling above the vehicle. The Montauk Fire Department and its ambulance company responded and treated the victims.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, Ecker said. No arrests have been made.
According to 27East, more than 600 customers were without power following the crash. Ecker said part of Shepherd's Neck and Old Montauk Highway were without power for at least three hours on Saturday afternoon. "LIPA responded pretty quickly," he said.
Old Montauk Highway, between Washington Street and Lincoln Road, was closed while LIPA worked to replace the pole, Ecker said.
