The following information was supplied by the East Hampton Town Police Department and the East Hampton Village Police Department . A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.
• A Springs man was arrested on weapons charges after East Hampton Town police said they confiscated three handguns from his residence.
James J. Carpenter, who is 46, was arrested on Nov. 7. He turned himself into police upon request following lab results that his guns were operable.
On Oct. 7, Suffolk County Family Court issued an order of protection that stated Carpenter had to surrender all firearms. His wife called police to the residence to have them confiscated.
Police found that the handguns — a Sturm, Ruger & Co. 9mm, a Sturm, Ruger & Co. .357 Magnum caliber revolver handgun, and a Walther .22 long rifle caliber Smith & Wesson model handgun — had been purchased in Pennsylvania in 2005 and brought to New York when the couple moved there in 2008.
No permits appeared to be on file.
Carpenter was charged with three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, which is levied when a defendant has previously been convicted of a class A misdemeanor or above.
Following arraignment in East Hampton Town Justice Court, he was released on his own recognizance.
• An 18-year-old East Hampton man was arrested on a petty larceny charge in on Nov. 3, after he allegedly stole a gasoline canister and two segments of garden hose from a house on Mako Lane in Amagansett. A resident of Mako Lane called police at about 2:45 a.m. when she saw the man carrying a large plastic gas can and hosing toward a vehicle. She yelled out to him and he fled. Town police stopped a Chevrolet Blazer on Bluff Road, near Dune Crest, and found the defendant with the canister and hose on his lap. He was placed under arrest at 3:20 a.m. He was released on $100 station house bail. Police withheld the defendant's name due to youthful offender status eligibility.
• Greg Slayton, 44, of Syosset, was arrested on a drunken driving charge in East Hampton Village on Nov. 8. Village Police said Slayton was driving a 2013 Mercedes Benz east on Newtown Lane at about 12:15 a.m., when he made an illegal U-Turn. The officer stopped the vehicle. Slayton appeared intoxicated, but refused to submit to a breath test in the field. He was charged with DWi, a misdemeanor, refusal to take a breath test, also a misdemeanor, and a traffic violation. His arraignment information was not immediately available.
