Police Logs: License Plate Reader Leads To DWI Arrest

Several drunken driving arrests reported this week in the Town of East Hampton.

The following information was supplied by the East Hampton Town Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

• Police were patrolling with a license plate reader in East Hampton on June 8 when they were alerted that a 2008 Chevrolet had a suspended registration due to an insurance lapse.

While pulling the car over on North Main Street, near Indian Hill Road, at about 7:45 p.m., police said they saw the passenger throw a bottle out of the window. Brian L. Damark, 23, of East Hampton, was behind the wheel, and appeared intoxicated, they said. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. Held overnight, he was arraigned in East Hampton Town Justice Court the next day and released on $350 bail. 

Police said the registered owner of the Chevrolet showed verification that the vehicle had always been covered with insurance, and that the suspension was an error with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

• Kaci E. Koehne, 20, of Sag Harbor, was arrested on a misdemeanor DWI charge in Montauk on June 3. Police said they saw her swerving on Montauk Highway, near Upland Road, at about 2:45 a.m. Police said they stopped her by the West Overlook, and she appeared drunk Her license was suspended on May 6 for "pending submission to a court out-of-state," according to her arrest report. She was additionally charged with aggravated unlicensed operation in the third-degree, another misdemeanor. She was released later that morning on her own recognizance.

• Timothy J. Doser, 28, of Rochester, NY, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, on June 5 in Montauk. Police said Doser did not stop at a stop sign on South Edison, at the intersection of Montauk Highway, at about 1:40 a.m. Held until arraignment, Doser was released on his own recognizance.

• Alyson E. Goll-Cuff, 33, of Montauk, was arrested on a DWI charge after she allegedly blew past a stop sign on Flamingo Avenue, at West Lake Drive, in Montauk on June 6. Police pulled her over in a 2008 Mazda in the parking lot at Liar's Saloon at about 1:15 a.m. They said she appeared intoxicated. Justice Lisa R. Rana released her on $300 bail later that morning.

• A 17-year-old East Hampton girl was arrested in Wainscott on the night of June 5 on suspicion of drunken driving. According to police, they received a call about an erratic driver on Montauk Highway at about 9:45 p.m. Just one minute later, an officer driving west on the highway saw a vehicle with one headlight, matching the description from the caller. The officer pulled the 2004 Land Rover over, near Wainscott Stone Road. Her breath smelled of alcohol and she performed poorly on field sobriety tests, police said. Her name was withheld because she is eligible for youthful offender status in court. She was released on her own recognizance.

• Two days before his 22nd birthday, Nickolay Braunreuther, of South Orange, NJ, was arrested on a DWI charge in Montauk. Police said he was driving a 2006 Chevrolet on Main Street, near South Edison, when he swerved into oncoming traffic at about 3 a.m. Though police turned on their lights and sirens, the driver reportedly did not pull over right away. About a half-mile later, he pulled over onto the shoulder, nearly hitting the guard rail, police said. Held until morning arraignment, he was released on his own recognizance.

• Carlos A. Hernandez, 26, of Springs, was arrested on a misdemeanor DWI charge, after allegedly speeding on Old Stone Highway in Amagansett on June 8 at about 3:20 a.m. Police pulled him over near Town Lane. He was allegedly intoxicated, and taken into custody. Arraigned later that morning, he was released on his own recognizance.

• Boris X. Penaloza-Alpala, 22, of East Hampton, was arrested on an aggravated DWI charge, a misdemeanor, on June 6 at about 9:30 p.m. After police stopped him on Abraham's Path, near Springs Fireplace Road, they found his blood alcohol level was above .18, leading to the aggravated charge. Held overnight, he was released on $500 bail.

• A headlight, or lack thereof, led to the arrest of Simon P. Cascante, 21, of Springs, on a misdemeanor DWI charge in East Hampton on June 7 at about 3 a.m. Police said he was driving on Three Mile Harbor Road, near Oak View Highway, with only one working headlamp, when he turned into a driveway, turning off all the lights, and stopping in front of a closed gate. Police pulled in behind him, and found that he was under the influence of alcohol, they said. Justice Rana released him on his own recognizance later that day.
