Police Logs: Drunken Driver Almost Crashed into Squad Car in Montauk

East Hampton Town police made two DWI arrests last week, including one driver who was found sleeping behind the wheel.

The  announced the following drunken driving arrests on Monday.

Robert Raffo, 59, of Augustine, FL, was charged with felony driving while intoxicated after his car almost backed up into a police car in Montauk on Sunday morning at about 9:30 a.m. Police said they found Raffo behind the wheel of his 2010 Chevrolet in front of  on Montauk Highway at about 9:15 a.m. He was sleeping and had his foot on the brake.

The officer woke him up and instructed him to put his car in park. Raffo failed to do, and when he took his foot off the brake, the car went into reverse, while the officer stood next to the driver's side door. Raffo reportedly put his foot back on the brake when the officer again said to do so.

He appeared drunk, failed field sobriety tests, and was arrested. A check of his license with the State Department of Motor Vehicles, showed his licensed had been revoked from a prior D.W.I. in 2008. His car was then impounded.

Edward J. Martz, 52, of Montauk, was arrested on an aggravated D.W.I. charge after swerved onto the shoulder of Montauk Highway in that hamlet on Nov. 15 at 4:50 p.m. Police said Martz was driving a Chevrolet Blazer when they pulled him over on Seaside Avenue. After he performed poorly on several field sobriety tests, he was taken into custody, and held overnight for arraignment. Justice Cahill released him the next day on $500 bail. His blood alcohol level was reportedly above .18.
