PHOTOS: Capsized Racing Boat Lands in Montauk

A racing catamaran that overturned 70 miles offshore from Montauk was brought into the harbor at high tide.

A racing sailboat more than 90 feet in length and the overturned vessel was pulled into Montauk Harbor on Wednesday afternoon, where a heavy machinery crew from Keith Grimes, Inc. awaited the task of turning the boat at The Viking Dock.

"There was only one person on board and he was okay," said Petty Officer Ryan Clendenen, at the Montauk Coast Guard Station. He added that the mast had been cut from the boat, but that efforts to right the vessel in the water had still be unsuccessful.

Francis Joyon, a professional sailor who holds the world record for the fastest circumnavigation in a boat on his own, capsized around 5 a.m. on Monday morning, according to officials at the New Haven Coast Guard Sector.

Susan Grimes said that her crew would attempt to pump water from the hull before using cranes to turn the boat over. "If we need divers, we have certified divers" she said.

The scuttlebutt around the harbor Wednesday suggested the man might be a renowned boat racer.

"It was supposed to be an Atlantic crossing, and they ended up flipping it," said Carl Darenberg, who owns the Montauk Marine Basin, across the way from The Viking.

Ms. Grimes said that part of the difficulty with navigating the boat into the harbor was it's breadth -- "it's almost 40 feet wide." She added that the Viking Dock was large enough to accommodate the size, and that "this one is fiberglass, so it shouldn't be that heavy."

Keith Grimes, Inc. has brought in sunken boats and even aircraft that have landed in the water outside of Montauk. "We are the extreme excavators, or the extreme marine people -- we like the challenge," said Ms. Grimes.
