UPDATE 2: Firefighters Put Out Dumpster Fire in Wainscott

July 25, 10 a.m.: East Hampton Fire Marshal Chief David (Buzzy Browne) said that it was a three-yard Dumpster made of a plastic material that was used to dump cardboard that caught fire in the Wainscott Shopping Village on Tuesday afternoon.

He didn't find anything suspicious, though it wasn't clear what caused the blaze. It has been left as undetermined.

Previously, July 24: Thick black smoke billowed out from the area of the Wainscott Shopping Village on Tuesday afternoon.

A Dumpster fire was reported outside of the at 352 Montauk Highway in Wainscott at about 2 p.m.

The responded and extinguished the blaze.

Lea Braak said she called 911 after she saw smoke. She found some men outside with a garden hose trying to put out the flames, though she wasn't sure exactly what had caught fire. "It was more than just a dumpster fire," she said. "The whole wooden containment fence around it burned down with high flames and it almost spread to the trees outside."

She said the Bridgehampton firefighters were on scene within five minutes. , she said, had to clear out all of the landscaping and delivery trucks that sit behind the complex on Bathgate Road so that the fire trucks could get through.

The smell is still lingering — "The smoke was very acrid and my car, which was parked outside, is coated with white ash."

The East Hampton Fire Marshal's office did respond, but no one available for comment.
