Man Stabbed at Springs Fireplace Apartments, Attacker Arrested

East Hampton police are still searching for the knife used, while victim recovers from surgery.

A resident of the Springs Fireplace Apartments was stabbed outside his home on Monday morning.

East Hampton Town police say his attacker has been arrested and charged with second-degree assault, a felony, although a search is underway to find the knife.

Police Chief Ed Ecker said that Ismael Hernandez, who is 36, was stabbed in the stomach outside of his apartment at 140 Springs Fireplace Road at around 5 a.m.

Emergency medical services transported him to Southampton Hospital, where he underwent an operation and is listed in stable condition, Ecker said.

Carlos Bedoya, of Prospect Blvd., East Hampton, was apprehended and will be arraigned in East Hampton Town Justice Court on Tuesday.

His motive was unclear, Ecker said.

The police chief said a police search dog was brought in to try and find the weapon.

"There is no reason to believe this was anything other than a directed act," Ecker said.

The Springs Fireplace Apartments were built by the town in 2008, and are run by the East Hampton Housing Authority.
