Look Back at the Fires of 2013

A 90-year-old man lost his life after a fire broke out in his Sag Harbor house in September.

Unfortunately, there were some very serious fires that broke out throughout the town this year. One fire in Sag Harbor, led to a loss of life when 90-year-old Wesley Carrion died after his home went up in flames.

As we look back in the year in fires, please remember Carrion and his family in your thoughts. Also, please remember to say thank you to all the firefighters throughout the town who respond to emergencies and risk their lives everyday.

Cops: Electrical Issue Sparked Fire That Killed 90-Year-Old Man

Police and a fire chief who arrived first at a fire in Sag Harbor Village on Sept. 30 tried to save Wesley Carrion, 90, but the blaze was already too far along.

"The heat and fire was too intense," Sag Harbor Village Police Sgt. Paul Fabiano said the next morning. "My guys couldn't get in there."

Officers and Sag Harbor Fire Department First Assistant Chief Jimmy Frazier arrived at the 14 Hillside Drive East house, in the Sag Harbor Hills subdivision, within minutes. Flames were just starting to show, and there was a thick, black smoke coming from the house, he said.

Fire Erupts in Montauk Shores Condos

A fire that broke out in the Montauk Shores Condominiums destroyed two mobile homes on the morning of Nov. 13, but firefighters were able to save several mobile homes from catching fire. Investigators believe a "catastrophic event regarding the electric service or the electric panel" in unit 100, the southern building, caused the blaze, which spread to unit 101 to the north.

Lightning Strikes Inlet Seafood During Thunderstorm in Montauk

While things tend to slow down on Labor Day, Inlet Seafood Restaurant on East Lake Drive in Montauk had a jolt of activity when lightning struck, starting a small fire on Sept. 2.

Firefighters Quickly Doused Blaze, Neighbor Says

East Hampton firefighters made a quick stop on a house fire in Whalebone Woods on the night of June 21. The fire damaged 74 Bow Oarsman Road, a two-story saltbox house at the intersection of Tub Oarsman Road. It was unoccupied at the time.

5-Alarm Fire in East Hampton Quickly Knocked Down

Firefighters from five different departments were up overnight helping to bring water to a house fire in East Hampton on Oct. 31. East Hampton Fire Department Chief Tom Bono said a call came in from the homeowner that 168 Two Holes of Water Road at about 12:30 a.m., and when he got there, he found two rooms were on fire inside the house and the deck was ablaze. The flames were already through the roof, he said. Fire investigators later said a gas grille outside started the fire.

Fire Breaks Out on Old Stone Highway

Firefighters extinguished a blaze at 163 Old Stone Highway in Amagansett on a the sweltering afternoon of July 7. Flames were shooting through the roof when the first firefighters arrived, and thanks to a quick search, a chief rescued the only occupant: An old Golden Retriever named Cooper cowering in the corner of the home. Two Amagansett firefighters were transported to Southampton Hospital, treated for dehydration, and released.
