Update: Hess Closes, Power Cut Following Car Crash in Wainscott

After a car struck a pole on Thursday night, 245 customers left without power.

Update: On Friday at about 2 a.m., power was restored to the area around Hess in Wainscott.

A car struck an electric pole on Montauk Highway near the gas station in Wainscott on Thursday evening, which led to power being shut down in the immediate area.

The car cracked the pole in half just before 10:30 p.m. The driver was taken to the hospital for evaluation of injuries and the Bridgehampton Fire Department was on scene.

According to chatter on the police radio, there were two transformers on the struck pole and workers with the Long Island Power Authority, which was called out to the scene, decided to turn off the power while repairing the pole.

The move has caused 245 customers in Wainscott to go without power and the 24-hour Hess station to close.

The normally lit-up area on Montauk Highway, by the traffic light on Wainscott-Northwest Road went completely dark.

LIPA estimates that power will be restored by 1:55 a.m. on Friday.
