Over 100 Learn How To Save a Life on the Sidewalk

East Hampton Village Ambulance Association trained people in front of Starbuck's to try and improve survival chances of cardiac arrest victims.

The launched a "Hands Only CPR" campaign over the weekend, training over 100 people in the life-saving technique.

Volunteers with the ambulance association set-up outside of with "dummies" to teach shoppers and visitors how to conduct cardio pulmonary resuscitation with only their hands.

"We've been working on a few projects to improve survival from sudden cardiac arrest in our community," said David Baumrind, who is a member of the ambulance association.

He attended a "Resuscitation Academy," last fall to learn why survival rates in other parts of the country, such as in Seattle, are higher. He learned that survival rates increase when "bystander" CPR is improved in the community.

"With the support of the East Hampton Village Ambulance Association and the Village of East Hampton, and Starbucks, we were able to launch this initiative today," he said on Sunday. "In addition to this, Suffolk County EMS has
made improving rates of bystander CPR in Suffolk County one of their highest
priorities."
