Fire Rekindles at Amagansett House Monday

Firefighters stop smoldering debris from growing into another fire.

Firefighters were called back to the scene of Sunday afternoon's fire after it rekindled on Monday morning.

Just before 11, the Amagansett Fire Department received word that some ashes and debris were smoldering at 163 Old Stone Highway. Flames badly damaged the house on Sunday, bring out four departments. Firefighters went back in service just a half-hour later.

The East Hampton Town fire marshal's office has not determined a cause yet, according to Chief David "Buzzy" Browne. "We're there again today sifting through the debris," he said.

Amagansett Fire Chief Dwayne Denton said the second floor and attic collapsed during the fire on Sunday. East Hampton Fire Department's aerial ladder truck was brought to the scene to attack the fire and find any hotspots from above.

Firefighters worked in intense heat on Sunday — temperatures in Amagansett were around 80 degrees with 84 percent humidity when the fire broke out.

There was some good news. First Assistant Chief Allen Bennett Jr. rescued the homeowner's dog from the house just as smoke was starting to fill the first floor. No one was home when the fire started, but passersby called 911 when they saw flames.
