Police Investigating Wainscott Crash Friday Evening

One victim flown to Stony Brook University Medical Center following a two-car crash Friday evening.

Update, 10:30 p.m.: East Hampton Village police are investigating what caused the crash that occurred on Montauk Highway in Wainscott on Friday evening.

Captain Mike Tracey said one of the two cars — reportedly a Lexus SUV — landed on its roof in front of Highway Diner & Bar. A Medevac helicopter flew the driver to Stony Brook University Medical Center, after the East Hampton Fire Department heavy rescue helped extricate him from the vehicle. There was no word on his condition late Friday night.

The other driver, who was behind the wheel of Toyota Tacoma pick up truck, did not appear to be seriously injured, Tracey said. East Hampton Village Ambulance Association transported that driver to Southampton Hospital.

Previously: Emergency responders are on the scene of an accident, in which a vehicle flipped over in front of the Highway Diner & Bar on Montauk Highway in Wainscott on Friday evening.

East Hampton Fire Department's heavy rescue squad and East Hampton Volunteer Village Ambulance were called to the accident at 5:35 p.m. The chief reported two victims.

The accident occurred in front of the Highway Diner & Bar at the Veteran of Foreign Wars post.

Montauk Highway is closed in both directions around the accident. East Hampton town and village police departments also responded to help divert traffic down Daniels Hole Road and Wainscott Northwest Road.

Sam Duane, a bar tender at the restaurant, said the accident sent customers and employees outside to help, including an EMT who was having dinner at the restaurant. "Pretty much everyone went out there to help — there was a car in the middle of the road," she said, although she didn't actually see or hear the accident occurred.

Wreckers were called for a Lexus SUV and Toyota Tacoma pick up truck.

Duane confirmed that there were two people trapped in the vehicles, and that the fire department was working to free them.
