Police Investigating Wainscott Crash Friday Evening

One victim flown to Stony Brook University Medical Center following a two-car crash Friday evening.

Update, 10:30 p.m.: East Hampton Village police are investigating what caused the crash that occurred on Montauk Highway in Wainscott on Friday evening.

Captain Mike Tracey said one of the two cars — reportedly a Lexus SUV — landed on its roof in front of Highway Diner & Bar. A Medevac helicopter flew the driver to Stony Brook University Medical Center, after the East Hampton Fire Department heavy rescue helped extricate him from the vehicle. There was no word on his condition late Friday night.

The other driver, who was behind the wheel of Toyota Tacoma pick up truck, did not appear to be seriously injured, Tracey said. East Hampton Village Ambulance Association transported that driver to Southampton Hospital.

Tracey said no charges have been filed, and that they are investigating what led to the accident, which shut down Montauk Highway, between Wainscott Northwest Road and Daniels Hole Road, for about two hours.

Both vehicles were badly damaged.

The highway was reopened at about 7:40 p.m.

Update, 7:40 p.m.: Montauk Highway has been re-opened to traffic.

Update, 7:20 p.m.: Highway Diner & Bar has closed for the evening since the highway is still closed after the two-car crash that happened nearly two hour ago.

Update, 6:35 p.m.: East Hampton Fire Department units have returned to the firehouse, but the highway remains closed, while wreckers tow away the vehicles involved.

Update, 6:12 p.m.: A Medevac helicopter is headed to the East Hampton Airport in Wainscott, not far from the accident scene, to transport one of the patients to Stony Brook University Medical Center.

Previously: Emergency responders are on the scene of an accident, in which a vehicle flipped over in front of the Highway Diner & Bar on Montauk Highway in Wainscott on Friday evening.

East Hampton Fire Department's heavy rescue squad and East Hampton Volunteer Village Ambulance were called to the accident at 5:35 p.m. The chief reported two victims.

The accident occurred in front of the Highway Diner & Bar at the Veteran of Foreign Wars post.

Montauk Highway is closed in both directions around the accident. East Hampton town and village police departments also responded to help divert traffic down Daniels Hole Road and Wainscott Northwest Road.

Sam Duane, a bar tender at the restaurant, said the accident sent customers and employees outside to help, including an EMT who was having dinner at the restaurant. "Pretty much everyone went out there to help — there was a car in the middle of the road," she said, although she didn't actually see or hear the accident occurred.

Wreckers were called for a Lexus SUV and Toyota Tacoma pick up truck.

Duane confirmed that there were two people trapped in the vehicles, and that the fire department was working to free them.

Check back for more information as it becomes available.

To hear that a car flipped?? How unlikely on a two lane/two direction country road. Someone had attitude or someone has eyesight issues. I was driving there 15 minutes earlier.

@ Ruby: Or a deer ran out in front of one of the vehicles causing it to break suddenly; or one of the drivers suffered a medical emergency causing them to lose control. You should stop being so presumptious till you know the details.

Maybe deer??? I saw a deer hit there two weeks ago that stopped traffic both ways... the deer hobbled off the road..... possibly one of these vehicles was avoiding a deer and were unfortunate to collide.

Ancient astronaut theorists believe it is possible that aliens caused this.

Yes, yes...Shadowman does have a point there. Of course, only a brave, secure man would ever have the guts to say what none of the rest of us would ever dare to! Moving right along, I wish those involved a speedy recovery. I'd also like to add that since this new business opened I've noticed cars that slow down (trying to find it?) and stop in the middle of the road, with many who don't signal before they turn in. Others pull out causing drivers to brake in order to avoid a collision. It is a straight road without curves and clear visibility from both directions, so I don't understand why this is happening. Drivers beware of this location. I've noticed these "transgressions" prior to this accident, so it is not a big surprise that something like this happened. I have made it mandatory that all my kids take defensive driving classes, more for the information than the discounts...although both have benefits. Driving defensively has helped me in many instances, so be safe all!
