False Alarm Calls Out Water Rescuers Thursday Night in Wainscott

Coast Guard, ocean rescuers, and fire department personnel responded to Beach Lane.

Beach-goers concerned about the actions of a sailboat in the ocean off of Wainscott called for help Thursday evening.

An hour and a half later, the rescue operation was called off when it was determined the sailboat, heading west, was manned and no one was in distress.

The East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue Squad and the Bridgehampton Fire Department's water rescue squad responded to the end of Beach Lane with jet skis and a boat after numerous calls were received at 8:09 p.m.

East Hampton Marine Patrol responded, as did Suffolk County police aviation. Coast Guard Station Montauk spoke to one caller that reported the boat in distress, but it did not send a boat to the area.

Bridgehampton Fire Department Chief Gary Horsburgh sent volunteers back to the firehouse at around 9:30 p.m., after the apparent false alarm.
