East Hampton Man Charged with Felony DWI Held on $10,000 Cash

Police say Ronald King hit a tree while driving drunk with a suspended license on July 26.

The following information was supplied by the East Hampton Town Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

• Ronald A. King, 37, of East Hampton, was arrested on a felony driving while intoxicated charge, after he hit a tree on Cedar Street in East Hampton on July 26 at about 5:50 p.m. Police said witnesses saw King's 1993 Jeep driving on the wrong side of the road before hitting the tree and then leaving the area. Police found the Jeep in a driveway on Oak View Highway with the engine running. King got out of the car, and police aid he appeared intoxicated.

King was charged with a felony due to a prior DWI conviction within the past 10 years. He was also charged with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, also a felony, for driving with a suspended license.

Following an arraignment in East Hampton Justice Court, King was held on $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond.

• Darlene R. Smith, 55, of East Hampton, was arrested after she rolled her 2005 Min over on Three Mile Harbor-Hog Creek Road in Springs on July 25 at about 11:30 p.m., police said. Smith was already out of the car when police arrived, but there was a strong odor of alcohol on her breath. She told police she swerved to avoid a deer, causing her off the road, to roll over, and go into the woods. She was taken by Springs ambulance to Southampton Hospital, where she consented to have her blood drawn, according to police. She was admitted for her injuries, and released with an appearance ticket. She was the only one in the car.

After Baird was placed in the back of a squad car, an officer allegedly found a small blue Ziplock-type of bag with a white powdery substance in the Ford' glove box. It later tested positive for cocaine. He was released on $250 bail.
