UPDATE: Crash Pins Driver in SUV in Wainscott

Traffic was backed up in both directions on Montauk Highway west of Georgica.

said there was no apparent reason why a car veered off into a pole on Montauk Highway, east of Stephen Hands Path in Wainscott on Friday afternoon.

In the hour after the crash, Lt. Tony Long said the department initial investigation revealed no impairment from drugs or alcohol.

Long said village dispatchers received multiple calls from passing motorists at 2:40 p.m. when the Mazda sport utility vehicle struck a utility pole on the southside of the highway between Stephen Hands Path and Georgica Road. The vehicle had been traveling east when it went off the travel portion of the highway and onto the grass.

The male driver was pinned inside the SUV, Long said. The 's heavy rescue squad cut the driver out of the car. Long confirmed the driver had injuries to his legs; police chatter on the radio indicated his legs may have been broken.

The driver's name was not immediately available as his family was still being notified. Police said they are exploring whether there was an underlying health issue or a distraction that caused the crash.

A Medevac helicopter was called and landed in East Hampton, but ultimately the decided to transport the driver to Southampton Hospital.

The accident occurred about 700 feet on the other side of where an on Wednesday afternoon. It is the third accident this week in that vicinity of .

Traffic was rerouted around the accident using Stephen Hands Path and Buckskill Road for about a half hour after the accident. While the Long Island Power Authority repaired the pole, traffic was shifted on the highway.

Power was not interrupted.
