Driver Airlifted After Crash in Northwest Woods

Heavy rescue equipment called out to single-car accident on Sunday evening.

The driver of a car that crashed into a tree in Northwest Woods on Sunday evening was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center.

The used heavy rescue equipment to cut the driver out of the Acura TL on Alewive Brook Road, in between Ely Brook Road Northwest Road, according to Chief Tom Bono.

Police, fire and emergency medical services were called out at 5:31 p.m.

Bono said the driver was conscious and alert when the transported him to the in Wainscott to meet the Medevac. He said it was the ambulance personnel's decision to send the driver to the hospital by helicopter.

The airbags had deployed in the car, which suffered front-end damage.

The cause of the crash was unclear, Bono said. He wasn't sure which direction the vehicle had been headed at the time of the crash.

There are many curves in the roads in that area.

No one else was in the car with the man, whose name was not immediately available from .

Fire police temporarily closed down the road between the two intersections while rescue personnel were on scene.

A tow truck removed the car at about 6:15 p.m.
