LONG ISLAND, NY -- As Tropical Storm Sandy left the area on Tuesday, a body was found on a local beach.

Village Police Chief Jerry Larsen confirmed the body washed up on Georgica Beach in East Hampton Village. A passer-by made the discovery at about 7:30 a.m., he said.

"It appears to be a female, in her late 40s or early 50s," Larsen said, as he left the beach parking lot, which is cordoned off.

Detectives are working to identify the woman.

During the storm, the current was moving to east to west. Police are looking into any missing persons reported.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner's office arrived there at about 10:15 a.m.

Georgica Beach, which is believed to have suffered some bad erosion in the storm, was closed to the public, the entrance barricaded, on Monday morning due to storm surge.

Praying for the family of whoever she is. God knows and that's good enough for me.
