Crimes Nearby: Woman Held Hostage in Mattituck

Also, a man was arrested after police said he called and threatened the Greenport High School principal.

The following information was supplied by the East End police departments and the Suffolk County DA's office. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

NORTH FORK

• Police were on the scene of a hostage situation in Mattituck Monday night. 

According to Southold Town Police, a call came in at 9:09 p.m. regarding an incident on Pacific Street where a woman was heard screaming for help.

An officer was able to make contact with the woman and get her out of the home, while a suspect, a 50-year-old man from Mattituck, retreated into the residence.

The woman told police the man had assaulted her and held her against her will, police said.
 
Police made contact with the man, but he refused orders from the officers to exit the home, police said. Suffolk County's emergency services unit and hostage negotiation team responded and assisted Southold Town Police officers. 

The man later exited the residence and was taken into custody. He was charged with unlawful imprisonment and harassment, misdemeanors.

A Greenport man was arrested after police said he called and threatened the Greenport High School principal.

According to Southold Town police, the man, 54, was arrested on Monday at 8 a.m. and charged with aggravated harassment, a misdemeanor, after he called Principal Leonard Skuggevik.

The suspect was arraigned and released on his own recognizance, police said.

SOUTHAMPTON

• Charles Engelken, 24, of Noyac, was arrested on two consecutive days on charges stemming from a dispute on Jan. 7. Engelken was involved in a physical altercation with a man at a residence on Rosewood Drive during which he allegedly punched the man repeatedly in the face and put a hole in the wall. When police arrived, Engelken was taken into custody and charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor, second-degree harassment, a violation, and having a suspended registration, a violation. Police said a Southampton Town judge then issued an order of protection against Engelken. The next day, he was arrested again for allegedly calling the victim and threatening to kill him. He was charged with first-degree criminal contempt, a felony, for violating the court order.

• Dalton Sheen, 21, of Southampton, was arrested on a felony charge after he allegedly damaged private property in North Sea on Jan. 11. Police said they received a 911 call from a resident on Big Fresh Pond Road at around 4:15 a.m., claiming that Sheen had damaged two vehicles and about 12 feet of wooden fencing at the property. Sheen was arrested at the scene and charged with third-degree criminal mischief, a felony.  

EAST HAMPTON

• A 38-year-old Wainscott man is being held at the Suffolk County jail in lieu of bail after he allegedly violated a court order on Jan. 9. 

Police said that Christopher L. Metz had been served with a court order, effective through Feb. 28, 2014, to refrain from act of violence or threat. However, he reportedly violated that court order when he tried to prevent the person from calling 911 during a domestic dispute. He was arrested on Amagansett Drive in East Hampton at about 11:05 a.m. He was charged with criminal contempt in the first degree, a felony, criminal mischief in the fourth degree, a misdemeanor, and second-degree harassment, a violation.

Justice Lisa R. Rana set bail at $500 cash or $1,000 bond. He was turned over to the Suffolk County Sheriff's office, where he remained on Tuesday. 

WESTHAMPTON-HAMPTON BAYS

• Westhampton Beach police have charged Wilfred Sullivan, Jr. 54, of Westhampton Beach, with DWI, a felony because of prior convictions. His car was also seized under the Suffolk County seizure law.

Sullivan, police said, was pulled over at 12:49 a.m. on Sunset Avenue after he failed to signal. He was additionally charged with aggravated unlicensed, a felony due to prior convictions.

RIVERHEAD

• Southampton Town police arrested a 23-year-old Riverhead woman after she allegedly struck three pedestrians and a house and then fled the scene on Jan. 8. According to police, the woman was driving a 2002 Hyundai Elantra on Riverside Avenue in Flanders shortly after midnight when she struck the three victims and the house. That’s when police said she left the accident without exchanging any information. Police caught up with the woman on Old Westhampton Road in Northampton about four hours later and arrested her. She was charged with leaving the scene of an accident that caused personal physical injury, a misdemeanor.
