Nearby: ME's Office Investigates Homeless Man's Death

A man's body was found in the woods in Mattituck on Sunday, but police say his death does not appear suspicious.

After several busy weeks — particularly in Riverhead — there were less crimes to report this past week, but here are some investigations happening across the bay.

NORTH FORK

• The body of a deceased Hispanic male was discovered by Southold Town police on Sunday at 8:58 p.m. in a wooded area near the Long Island Railroad tracks west of Factory Avenue in Mattituck, police reported on Monday. Police officers responded to a report of an apparent deceased male subject in the wooded area and discovered the body of a Hispanic male at this location who appears to have been homeless, police said. Southold detectives and the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office have initiated an investigation into this death, which does not appear to be suspicious at this point.

RIVERHEAD

• A Riverside man reported that on Dec. 27, while he was watching TV in his home on Route 104, he heard glass break in his house and a stranger – a white man about 6 feet tall, wearing blue jeans and sneakers – came into his room, pushed him down on his bed and stole his wallet, a Chase debit card and $70 cash. He then fled the home southbound. A Suffolk County Sheriff’s K-9 unit, and a Suffolk County police helicopter responded to assist.
