Crimes Nearby: Cops Say Sex Offender Approached Boy at School

SOUTHAMPTON

After pleading guilty to second-degree murder in January, 22-year-old Pedro Jones, of Southampton, was on March 22. The Suffolk County district attorney's office said that Jones struck a 17-month-old he was babysitting so hard in the chest that the toddler, Roy Jones III, went into cardiac arrest. According to authorities, Jones said he punched the child to get him to calm down. Pedro Jones was not related to Roy Jones III, who was his then-girlfriend's son.

Susan F. Herman, 58, of Southampton, was arrested March 17 at 10:34 p.m and charged with felony DWI, according to police. Police said they stopped Herman while she was driving a 1992 Chevrolet on Pine Street for not being able to keep her vehicle on the roadway. Upon further investigation, she was placed under arrest, police said. A computer check revealed that Herman had two previous convictions for DWI within the past 10 years, police said. Her vehicle was seized as per the Suffolk County Vehicle Seizure Law and she was held overnight for arraignment, police said.

RIVERHEAD

A Riverhead man and former custodian at the Pulaski Street School , a class E felony, after he was arrested in February of 2011 following an East End Drug Task Force investigation.
Troy Trent, 42, was originally , who said he and another man, Joseph Gilliam, sold cocaine to an alleged street-level crack dealer in Riverhead, Ramon Overton.
Trent pleaded down on Monday in return for the lighter sentence, and will serve one year of interim probation. This means that over the next year, he must not get arrested or test positive for drugs, according to District Attorney Spokesman Bob Clifford. He will be advised of his final sentence on March 26, 2013, Clifford said.

According to Riverhead police, twice last week in front of and gave him money, asking him if he wanted to be his friend.
Riverhead Central School District Superintendent Nancy Carney said a school crossing guard spotted the man, "recognized the perpetrator and alerted uniformed officers."
The man was arrested on loitering charges and remains at Suffolk County Jail with bail set at $10,000.

A trio of teens after a man told police he was jumped by them, before they robbed him of a bag of food.
The 36-year-old reported victim was not injured in the incident, save for a few minor scrapes, according to police. Reports stated that the man called police after he said he was jumped and the teens were picked up shortly after.
He reportedly identified them, and all three were arrested on class C felony charges of robbery in the second degree.

WESTHAMPTON-HAMPTON BAYS

say they slapped multiple charges on a 34-year-old Calverton man after he led them on a high-speed chase before he crashed his car into a tree on Friday at 9:45 p.m.
According to Lt. Christopher Isola, when police attempted to stop Carl A. Ligon for speeding on County Road 104, Ligon failed to pull over and continued at an excessive speed, forcing officers to chase him, first by car then on foot.
During the chase, Ligon, said Ispola, recklessly drove through a stop sign and stop light and struck a tree.
"It got excessive to the point where we got close to having to discontinue the chase before it got out of control," said Isola. "But it ended positive."

Douglas Estridge, 27, of West Islip, was arrested March 25 at 9:06 p.m. on Sunrise Highway eastbound at the intersection of North Road in Hampton Bays. Estridge, said police, failed several field sobriety tests at the scene and was charged with driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher, a misdemeanor, and speeding, a traffic infraction. He was additionally charged with failure to produce an insurance card, not wearing a seat belt and failing to keep right in the road, all traffic infractions.

Douglas Champagne, 28, of Flanders, was arrested after police pulled him over March 24 at 4:18 p.m. for a traffic violation on West Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays, according to the arrest report. After failing several field sobriety tests, Champagne was taken into custody and charged with DWI with blood alcohol content of .08 or higher, a misdemeanor, and tailgating, a traffic violation.
