Crimes Nearby: Car Thieves Busted in Southampton, Cops Say

The following information was supplied by the East End Police Departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

Southampton

• Two men are being held at the Suffolk County jail in Riverside after being caught in Southampton driving in a car that was stolen a week earlier in Huntington Station, according to police.

Southampton Village police said an officer spotted a vehicle the night of May 2 traveling up North Sea Road with its headlights off and pulled it over on County Road 39. When the officer ran a computer check on the vehicle, it was learned that the 2012 Audi A6 had been reported stolen April 26, police said.

The passenger, Charles L. Stewart, 27, tried to run away, but he was caught after a brief foot chase, according to police. At 11:17 p.m., Stewart and the driver, 28-year-old William Anthony, both of Huntington Station, were placed under arrest.

Stewart was charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony; resisting arrest, a misdemeanor; and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. Police said he was also in violation of parole. Anthony was charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony; and driving while intoxicated and second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, both misdemeanors. 

•  Philip Gallo, 49, of Water Mill, was arrested at Southampton Town police headquarters on April 30 and charged with falsifying business records in the first degree, a felony. Police said Gallo is charged in relation to an incident on June 10, 2012, in Water Mill.

Riverhead

• A trio of Riverhead residents charged with scamming a construction worker from the winnings of his $74,000 lottery ticket were arraigned on Wednesday.
According to the office of District Attorney Thomas Spota, Yalcin Nergiz, 41, Yunis Ozturk, 33, and Orhan Ozurk, 47, "deceived the winner by paying him $774 of the $74,892 payoff when he redeemed the ticket on March 18."

North Fork  

•A 61-year-old man was arrested and charged with stalking a 19-year-old woman in Southold, town police said. Cesar Muralles, who lives in Southold, was charged with stalking in the fourth degree, a misdemeanor.

• A Mattituck man was slapped with a felony charge after a search warrant led to a drug bust at his home on the morning of May 2.

Police said they found PCP, marijuana, a scale, and cash at the residence on Old Sound Avenue. Ed Thompson, 43, was arrested at 6:55 a.m., and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree, a felony, criminal use of drug paraphernalia in the second degree, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

The East End Drug Task Force, along with Southold Town police, searched the house as a result of an investigation into drug sales activity on the North Fork. The Suffolk County Police Emergency Services Unit, a Southold police K-9 unit, and New York State K-9 units assisted in the search.
