Crimes Nearby: Calverton Woman Allegedly Had Knuckle Knife

The following information was supplied by the East Hampton End police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

SOUTHAMPTON

• Tania Copenhavern, 39, of Calverton, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a felony, on Jan. 29 after she was stopped on County Road 39 in Southampton near Tuckahoe Road for a traffic infraction, Southampton Town police said. Police said Copenhaver was pulled over for moving from a lane unsafely when it was discovered that she had in her possession a metal knuckle knife, which is illegal in New York. According to the New York State Penal Law, "metal knuckle knife" means "a weapon that, when closed, cannot function as a set of metal knuckles, nor as a knife and when open, can function as both a set of metal knuckles as well as a knife."

• A 16-year-old girl from East Hampton was arrested Jan. 27 at 12:07 a.m. and charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument in the third degree, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. Southampton Village police said they observed a vehicle stop on North Sea Road and place an empty beer can in the road. After stopping the vehicle, an officer found four 16-year-olds from East Hampton with a case of beer in the vehicle and some marijuana, police said. Two of the 16-year-olds had fake IDs, police said. All were processed and released to their parents; two posted $100 bail.

• Zoli Zhagui, 24, of Sag Harbor, was arrested Jan. 24 at 10:41 p.m. and charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. Sag Harbor police said Zhagui left a 7-year-old and 4-year-old home alone while she went to work in Bridgehampton. According to the arrest report, Zhagui told police she left the Cuffee Drive home at 8:30 p.m. Another occupant of the house reported arriving home at 9:50 p.m. and finding the children alone. Zhagui was booked at police headquarters and released on an appearance ticket. Child Protective Services was notified.

WESTHAMPTON-HAMPTON BAYS

• An East Quogue man was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana on Jan. 13 after police stopped him for failing to maintain his lane on Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays.  Police say that upon investigation they found that Evan Gilks, 18, had a small bag of marijuana and a pipe. Gilks was also cited for moving from a lane unsafely.

• A 23-year-old Hampton Bays man was charged with DWI on Jan. 28 after police pulled him over for speeding on Montauk Highway.  Police say Steven Campos stopped near and charged with DWI, aggravated unlicensed in the third degree, unlicensed operator, failure to signal and speeding.

• Nichol Banks, 38 of Southampton, was charged with DWI on Jan. 29 after police say they pulled Banks over for speeding and swerving on Sunrise Highway in Hampton Bays. Police say Banks had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and has slurred speech and glassy eyes.

• Bryan Mora, 20, of Hampton Bays, was charged with DWI on Jan. 28 after police stopped him on Flanders Road in Hampton Bays for failing to maintain his lane.  Police also charged Mora with moving from a lane unsafely.

A 20-year old East Hampton resident was arrested for obstructing governmental administration after police say she failed to move away from a scene where the driver of the car she was in was charged with DWI. Police say Wendy Quintero, crossed her arms and said, "Get your hands off of me, I'm not moving."

A Riverside woman was shortly after midnight on Thursday. According to Southampton Police, Valderine Smithen, 40, threatened a Vail Avenue resident with a razor during an argument.
Police said she was found in the vicinity of the incident and arrested for criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a felony, and menacing in the second degree, a misdemeanor.

• A Southold man was arrested early Friday morning on DWI charges after State Police said he hit a curb while speeding around the Riverside traffic circle.
According to police, Paul Reinckens, 24, was pulled over just after 2 a.m. while driving a gray Mercury. Police said he struck a curb and after being asked to pull over, Reinckens stopped in the middle of the road and had to be instructed again to pull to the side of the road. Police said a strong odor of alcohol was detected on his breath, and he failed field sobriety tests. He was charged with DWI and speeding, and is due back at Southampton Town Justice Court on Feb. 12.

NORTH FORK

• Joseph Gagen, 45, of Greenport, was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated on Jan. 29 at 11:35 p.m. on First Street in the village. Police said that Gagen was driving south on First Street and struck a parked vehicle. Gagen was found to be intoxicated, transported to police headquarters in Peconic and held pending arraignment. There were no injuries in the collision, police said.

• David Juzapavicus, 51, of Greenport, was charged with DWI on Jan. 29 at 9:02 p.m., after police stopped him for failing to maintain his lane on Fifth Street in the village, police said. Juzapavicus was found to be intoxicated, transported to police headquarters in Peconic and held pending arraignment, police said.

• A 27-year-old employee of Hampton Hearth and Patio on Route 25 in Southold reported to on Jan. 28 that someone stole $300 from a desk drawer of the retail store some time between Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. and Jan. 28 at 11 a.m., police said. Police said that entry was made through the front door which was locked but was jiggled open. Investigation of the incident continues, police said.

• The owner of reported to police on Jan. 26 at 2:14 a.m. that someone had entered an unlocked area of the building located behind on Route 25 in Mattituck around 12:45 a.m. that morning, unsuccessfully tried to break through a wall connecting two different areas of the laundromat, smashed a front plateglass window, and kicked in the door to the office, police said. When police arrived at the scene, the rear door was open but nothing appeared to be missing, police said. The incident resulted in $250 worth of damage and is still being investigated, police said.

• A employee reported to police on Jan. 25 that three lawns in three separate parks — on Bay Avenue, on Peconic Bay Avenue and — had been damaged by someone who drove on the grass and did doughnuts, police said. The employee told police that he believes the damage occurred some time between Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. and Jan. 25 at 7 a.m. and requested extra patrols, police said.
