Cops: Teen Drove Drunk with Mom Riding Shotgun; They Both End Up in Cuffs

Police say the boy's mother, 33, pushed officers and interfered with his arrest in Springs on Nov. 1.

The following information was supplied by the East Hampton Town Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

• A 17-year-old from Elmhurst was arrested on a drunken driving charge and his mother, who was a passenger, was arrested as well when she tried to prevent his arrest during a traffic stop in Springs on Nov. 1.

Police said the family's 2010 Nissan was seen swerving on Three Mile Harbor-Hog Creek Road, near Folkstone Drive, at about 10 p.m. The officer reportedly saw the Nissan unsafely pass another vehicle in a no passing zone, too. Police tried to initiate a traffic stop at the intersection of Gann Road, but the driver drove off the pavement and continued several hundred feet before stopping near Squaw Road. The driver —a teenaged boy — appeared intoxicated and performed poorly on field sobriety tests, police said.

While an officer placed the teen under arrest, his 33-year-old mother "became irate and exited the front passenger seat in an attempt to prevent the arrest," police wrote in their report. They said they warned her several times to stay in the vehicle, but she pushed one of the officers she was trying to get past — not once, but twice in the chest.

Police told her she was being placed under arrest, as well, but she refused to put her hands behind her back, they said. She flailed her arms and kicked her legs, hitting one officer in the shins before being subdued.

The teen was charged with aggravated DWI, a misdemeanor, and his mother was charged with resisting arrest and second-degree obstruction of governmental administration, both misdemeanors, and second-degree harassment, a violation. The teen was released on his own recognizance and the mother was released on $500 bail.

• Rody D. Tapia, 39, of Springs, was arrested on a felony drunken driving charge, following an accident close to his house on Roosevelt Avenue on the evening of Oct. 27. Tapia was driving his 2009 Audi north when he hit a 1991 Nissan, parked on the side of the road at about 7:50 p.m. He then proceeded to his driveway. When police arrived they found a vehicle matching the description in the driveway of 40 Roosevelt Ave., and found three men standing around the Audi, which had front driver's side damage. There was also blood on the steering wheel and driver's seat, police said. Tapia came out of the house and stood on the front porch, and police said they could see he was bleeding from his face. Police interviewed him, found he didn't need medical attention, but that he had been drinking. He was placed under arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, a felony, at 8:40 p.m. His Audi was impounded. Held overnight, he was arraigned the next day. Bail was set $10,000.

• William S. Quimby, 56, of Montauk, was arrested on a charge of operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs after an accident on Oct. 29 in Amagansett. At about 7 p.m., police received two reports of an erratic driver heading east in a black Chevrolet on Montauk Highway. At 7:10 p.m., an accident was reported in front of the Amagansett IGA, and police found a 2002 Chevrolet, matching the previous descriptions, had struck a utility pole, snapping it in half. Quimby was behind the wheel, and appeared intoxicated. He was taken to Southampton Hospital for treatment of a fractured sternum and pain to his knees, police said. He was then released back into police custody and held until morning arraignment. He was released on $500 bail.

• Jaime O. Sanchez-Toledo, 29, of Montauk, was arrested Nov. 3 on a felony drunken driving charge due to a previous conviction within the past 10 years. According to police, they noticed the driver failed to maintain his lane, crossing over the double-yellow pavement markings several times on Montauk Highway, near Upland Road, at about 1:45 a.m. Pulled over near S. Eagle Street, police said the driver appeared intoxicated. They also found his licensed had been revoked in June 2010 for a DWI charge. He was charged with DWI and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the first degree, both felonies, at about 2:10 a.m. He was released on $7,500 bail.

• Jasmine E. Trent, 23, of East Pachogue, was arrested on a misdemeanor DWI charge in Amagansett on Oct. 30 at about 4 a.m. Police said she was speeding on Montauk Highway, near Hedges Lane, as she headed east. She was pulled over in front of the Amagansett School. She performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was arrested. She was released on $300 bail.
