Frank A. Hanna, of East Hampton, has been that led to a police chase and the victim being hospitalized for his injuries.

East Hampton Town police said Hanna, who is 29 years old, was taken into custody on Wednesday night at 5:45 p.m., nearly one week after the shooting took place inside Hanna's house at 154 Springs Fireplace Road.

Police charged him with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree assault, both felonies, and second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor. He was held overnight and will be arraigned in East Hampton Town Justice Court on Thursday morning.

Frederic Stephens Jr., 20, of East Hampton, was seriously injured when a bullet struck his torso/arm area on May 24 at about 8:30 p.m. The shooting was not immediately reported and Stephens was transported to the hospital in a private vehicle.

However, village police pulled over the car, which they said was being driven erratically. Stephens told police he had been shot and the driver took off toward Southampton Hospital. Village police said a high-speed chase ensued that included three departments. It ended when the driver pulled into the emergency room entrance at Southampton Hospital.

Stephens was transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he underwent surgery on Friday for his injuries.

Police said the investigation is continuing.

I have known Frank Hannah for years. He is a sweet guy who did a very stupid thing and the gun fired. Both victim and accused have stated it was an accident. Let's keep this fair and in perspective.
